Maria T. Sowul, 76, of Keansburg, passed away on Thursday, July 22nd, at Bayshore Medical Center, Holmdel. She was born in Melbourne, Victoria Australia, lived in Jersey City, prior to moving to Keansburg in 1955. Maria was a secretary for the State Police of New Jersey, Keyport. She was a member of Atlantic Watch Pipes and Drums of Neptune, as a Captain in the Color Guard. A member of the VFW Post 1953 in Keansburg, ladies auxiliary past president for 2 years. A member of the American legion Post 273 of Keansburg, ladies auxiliary past president for 7 years. She was also a lifetime member of the Vietnam Vets of America. Maria was a War Orphan and dedicated her life to several veterans groups for years. During the Vietnam War she was a member of Voices in Vital Americans. Maria was also a member of St. Mark’s Alter Guild for several years and volunteered her time to Project Paul. She loved to travel all over. Maria was pre deceased by her parents; Salvatore and Margaret D’Auria. She is survived by her Loving husband of 37 Years; Richard Sowul of Keansburg, her uncle John D’Auria and her aunt Carol, who were both her god parents of Whiting. Arrangements were under the direction of the Jacqueline M. Ryan Home for Funerals 233 Carr Ave. Keansburg. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday from 2-4pm. Cremation will be private.
