William H. O’Neil Sr., 94, of Highlands, passed away on Wednesday, September 22nd, at Laurel Bay Health and Rehab Center, Keansburg. He was born in Hilton Park, Middletown, New Jersey and has been a lifelong resident of Highlands. William served in the US Army as a military policeman. He was assigned at Oak Ridge Tennessee and Los Alamos, New Mexico in conjunction with The Manhattan Project. Upon his discharge from the service he returned to Highlands. He worked for the Federal Government for over 30 years and then for local contractors for many more. His prowess of operating heavy equipment was unmatched, skills he gladly taught others who were willing to learn. Safety being the first priority. William, Gipper or Gip as he was fondly called would help anyone who needed a hand. William was a loyal family man you could count on him in any situation. We are proud to have been able to call him husband, dad, pop-pop, Gipper and friend. He was an avid fisherman, bowler and sports fan. He liked hockey and UCON girls’ basketball. William was very artistic and handy, a collector of things. He also enjoyed making signs for the school fair. William was pre deceased by his son; Daniel O’Neil in 2019. He is survived by his beloved wife, his one and only, Marguerite O’Neil, who he married in 1956, three sons and daughters in law; Richard and Nancy O’Neil, William O’Neil Jr. and Patrick and Dr. Susan Wallace. Two daughters and sons in law; Elizabeth and Barry Sewing and Priscilla and Matthew Halvey. His sister; Mea Rugg. Eight grandchildren; Andrew, Matthew, Meghan, Austin, Elizabeth, Conall, Ryan and Brittany, three great grandchildren; Ryan, Noah and Luna. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Monday from 3-7pm at the Jacqueline M. Ryan Home for Funerals 233 Carr Ave. Keansburg. On Tuesday a service will take place at the funeral home at 11:45am. Burial to follow, Bayview Cemetery, Leonardo. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the American Legion Post# 143 in Highlands.
