Leslie M. Barr, 74, of Middletown passed away on Thursday, September 10 at Bayshore Healthcare Center, Holmdel. Les was a proud, lifetime resident of Middletown, NJ. While Les endured a lengthy illness, he continuously demonstrated his legendary personal strength, quick wit and unwavering determination to overcome his situation. Leslie was predeceased by his wife of 54-years, Sharon Barr, in 2018. He is survived by his daughter, Tammy Rae Barr of Delaware as well as his son and daughter-in-law, Mitchell and Tricia Barr of Freehold, NJ. He was the proud “Pop” to his six grandchildren, Brian, Michael, Corinne, Liam, Caitlin and Charlotte.Leslie was rarely one to sit still and occupied his time with his many hobbies and interests. After retiring from his more than thirty-year career as an assembly line worker with General Motors, Les found more time to enjoy boating, fishing and building his extensive antique car collection. Some favorite moments were spent helping friends with automotive projects or spending long hours fishing. Les seemed to always attempt to catch a fish larger than his “winning catch of 1984” when he won the annual tournament with the Leonardo Party and Pleasure Boatman's Association. As an active member of the Antique Motor Club of Monmouth County, Les enjoyed car shows, grilling at club picnics, and sharing events with fellow club members who became part of his “extended family.”

A remembrance ceremony will allow close family and friends to pay respects on Friday between 6-8 pm at the Jacqueline M. Ryan Home for Funerals at 233 Carr Ave. in Keansburg, NJ. On Saturday at 10:30 am, there will be a small service at the funeral home with burial to follow at Shorelands Memorial Park, Hazlet. As per the regulations imposed through the State of New Jersey, there will be a maximum of 50 people allowed in the funeral home at one time. Face protection is REQUIRED per the state regulations. We are sorry to learn of the passing of Les. The world is an emptier and less lively place without his enthusiastic conversations and energetic pursuit of solutions for his many friends and projects. How I managed to walk past his home for years before ever talking with him, we'll never know, but several years ago we started a passing friendship, the kind between hobbyists of similar interests and manners of thinking thru ways to build things. A memory of him I like was his happy story of driving a long way to a southern state to pick up his new car trailer, and as good luck would choose to favor him, in an unplanned crossing of paths, he drove his truck first into and then thru the deepest darkness of the total solar eclipse, and back out into daylight.

We are so sad to hear this news. Les and Sharon were the best neighbors. I felt they were always looking out for us. One of my fondest memories was one Mother's Day a few years ago. Sharon had brought my kids over to their house. They came back with plants for me. When I said thank you, Sharon told me it was Les' idea. He wanted to make sure I got something for Mother's Day. Les was a kind man with a good heart. We will miss him.
